Catch-up schooling over the summer / Huge thanks

1. Summer Catch-up Schooling
Many schools have done an amazing job during lockdown, but in order to give these a break, and to help the majority of children who have not been able to attend school to catch-up, I have been supporting the Invicta Pop-Up Academy. Using the motto 'Veni Didici Vici' – Latin for 'We Came, We Learnt, We Conquered' – and run by an army of volunteer Kent teachers, the Academy will provide lessons for Key stages 1 – 4 beginning on Monday 27th July, and finishing on Friday 28th August.

As well as the lessons timetable, there will be weekly "aim high" inspirational sessions which will be delivered by successful people from the worlds of sport, media, business and the arts.

All lessons will run to a timetable through which parents and guardians can sign up their children via a website. Sign up has already begun and the numbers are growing daily with over 70 teachers and hundreds of students already registered.

Thank you again to all the teachers who have already kindly volunteered to help via the website.

This is a major initiative, and I would encourage all parents to sign their children up: www.invictaacademy.com

(I would love to hear parents' views on their children's schooling during lockdown: hollowaya@parliament.uk)

2. Thank You to all who volunteered.
Firstly as we cautiously un-lock the economy, may I thank the 99% of people in Gravesham who volunteered to rally round their families and neighbours over the last 4 months.

I would also like to thank the 1,400 of you who volunteered to help through the Gravesham Community Support website set up by Marna Gilligan, James Ferrin and me. This was a huge and wonderful response, and it will not have escaped the notice of many of you that we therefore did not need to call on your support. Those who did did everything including checking-up on neighbours and collecting medication and shopping for them. There were kitchens at the Gurdwara and the City Praise centre producing tens of thousands of meals, people making PPE, even the remarkable Mr Walters trying to manufacture ventilators in his workshop in Meopham.

Truly we have seen an outbreak of Super Neighbourliness – let's hope the huge positive legacy of all this continues, as we also remember the near 200 of our neighbours who have died.

Many thanks indeed
